Nugget & The Pink Lakes

You thought the lakes on Nugget & The Surreal Lakes were bizarre? Well take a look at these lakes. They're Pink! Permanently and entirely pink lakes! The unique beauty of these lakes has made them top tourist attractions and visitors fly from all over the world to witness these phenomena firsthand.

PINK LAGOON, MEXICO

First up - Pink Lagoon, Mexico. This natural pink wonder adorns the tiny fishing village of Las Coloradas, Mexico. The mesmerising beauty is framed by crystal-like white salt and is one of the most photographed pink lakes in the world. The shallow lagoon's beautiful colour comes from the chemicals released by an abundance of red plankton and brine shrimp. As the sun evaporates the salty waters, the remains are fresh sea salt which has made the area famous for its salt mining since the rule of the Mayan Empire to present.

LAKE HILLIER, AUSTRALIA

Lake Hillier is located on the edge of Middle Island, just off the south coast of Western Australia. The amazing feature of this saline lake is the long and thin shore line which separates the blushing lake from the Southern Ocean. Despite its high salt content, the lake is safe for swimming. The only living forms present are microorganisms which gives the lake its high salt content and bubble gum colour.

LAGUNA COLORADO, BOLIVIA

Laguna Colorado is a shallow, salty lake found southwest of the Altiplano, Bolivia. The presence of red plankton is so abundant that the lake sometimes appears to be red. Three of the world's six flamingo species, Chilean, Andean and James flamingos inhabits Laguna Colorada. Interesting fact - flamingos gets their pink colour from the constant consumption of the red algae found in pink lakes.

SALINAS DE TORREVIEJA, SPAIN

Salinas de Torrevieja, Spain's pink water lake, spreads across 1,400 hectares. The salt content of this lake is so high that it allows bathers to stay afloat, similar to the Dead Sea. The lake is believed to have bodily benefits as the minerals present in the water expels many skin toxins. Interestingly, near the lake, a black mud area is also believed to have many therapeutic healing properties when applied to the skin. A beautiful feature of Salinas de Torrevieja is the abundance of flamingos which are sometimes seen in the thousands.
